Home and Thankful

We are all now safely home and thankful for the blessing of serving in Peru.  Our God allowed us to be in ministry with people from different cities, faiths and ages.  All of us together formed what was needed for this trip.  We had clinic in multiple locations, vacation Bible school, a meeting for parents across the different countries (over the Internet), fathers meetings, personal prayer time with moms, music, pizza, fire fighters, tiling, remodeled a room,  etc.  I could go on and on.  Other disciples also shared their little "lunches" and look at HOW MUCH God did..

  Bible story from Matthew 14:

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

It is amazing what we can do when we trust Christ with what little we have and allow him to use it for his glory.  Dear friend thank you for the ways you have shared your little lunches for Christ and continue to do so. As this mission trip has concluded know that Christ continues to call each of us in new ways to share, love, and be present.
Peace be with you,

10 missionaries are home!

Arriving on Home Shores
So far 10 of our team have made it home: Georgia, Jeremiah, Dwayne, Earilyn, Shelia, Teresa, John, Jessie, Chris, and Darcy.   The remaining are having R&R in Peru before flying home this weekend.  We will let you know as they arrive home and appreciate your prayers for all of us.  We will try and recover from this trip in many ways:
Our Minds - from the many ways we listened, translated, tried new things (tiling)
Our Bodies - from exhaustion, traveling, sitting, standing, lifting, working
Our Hearts- from hearing the cries of God's people,

Thank you for praying with us and continuing to journey with us by listening and extending now grace to us as our healing continues.  Soon very soon God will invite us on a new journey and we must rest to prepare for that opportunity.

Peace be with you,

Hello From Chincha!

Children at VBS
Saturday was such a great day. We went to the church to have VBS
with the kids. Rita told the story of Jonah and the whale. We sang
"this little light of mine" and "Jesus loves me." it was such a
great experience. After the lesson we did crafts with the fifty plus
kids that showed up. The kids decorated fishes and crosses. Glitter was
everywhere but the kids were having such a great time. We brought out
bubbles and punchy balloons and the kids went wild. Pastor Pedro
closed the VBS with a prayer and we cleaned up to leave. That afternoon
we held an event for the teens from the surrounding churches. The local
firemen came to teach the youth what to do in an emergency. This is the
first of a series of classes the we supplied from them.
We closed the evening with a birthday dinner for Beth.
This was such a blessed day. From Jessie reporting for the team :)

Independence

Independence is something most people take for granted. It is something I have rarely experienced.  As a young man with seizures, and inability to "talk" in the traditional sense many people take care of me. I have since birth had help with going to the bathroom, feeding, walking, medicines, etc.  But here at CASP some things have changed - my mom let go of me for about 15 minutes.

Sounds like no big deal I'm sure but it was for both of us as I walked around the school by myself.  I went straight up to the third floor and then tried a few doors.  They were locked!  So I kept going until I reached my class room.  It seemed all very strange this new freedom.  I suspect I could get use to it!

(This is now mom) I did let Jeremiah go not easily though as I was encouraged by one of the mom's that this is a safe place and that I could watch him from the second floor.  So I let go for the first time in 19 years!  I thought my heart would stop.  I can't explain exactly what it felt like except that for a mother with a special child the fears are countless.  But I did it and throughout the week I would do it for 5 minutes at a time.  (these things take time)

Jeremiah doing laundry ( also learned to fold)

Taking turns with my class with the dogs

Franco he loved the pizza

Jeremiah &   Morgan sharing pizza

Claudia, Liliana, Karla - more of my classmates

One of the other things we got to do is to learn math by buying pizza - great deal huh!  We brought a gift from the Youth fund of the United Methodist Church which we partially used here at CASP.  With the money we bought pizza for 31 students.  But before we could order, we had to figure out how many pieces of pizza were needed, how many pizzas that meant, and how much they would cost.  One of the cool things is that one of the CASP alumni works at Pizza Hut and they gave us their discount!  So all our pizzas were buy one get one free!  We had a great time and no one talked much after the pizza arrived. :)

Over all my time at CASP has been wonderful.  I wish I could go to school here longer and take more time to learn with my new friends.  But I know my dog at home will miss me and probably be hungry since he eats all my leftovers. Please pray for my new friends they work very hard learning new things and hope to one day help there moms & dads.

Peace to you!   Jeremiah (and mom)

We are blessed!

Felix, Dwayne, John

Chris in Pharmacy

Waiting for the doctor
We're starting our second day of work here at CASP.  John is displaying his DEstruction skills by helping knock down a wall to enlarge their computer lab. Sheila and Earlyn have proven they can work side-by-side with Spanish-speaking women here without having language skills.  Teresa is proving her worth at taking blood pressures, etc. Chris is working in the pharmacy and also taking "mug shots" of patients for his dad's records. Rita is interviewing the patients or their caregivers before they see the doctor to streamline his work. Jeremiah is attending classes here, adapting very well.  Georgia and Dwayne are keeping an eye on Jeremiah and helping here and there.  Dr. Darcy was busy all day yesterday with patients, and we were here after most of the regular staff had left for the evening.  We are all staying in good health, and are blessed to be in a place so welcoming and appreciative of what we do.  The weather is much better than I'd imagined for a Peruvian winter. The food has been great.  And the people are wonderful.  We truly are blessed.
                    --Yours in Christ,   Rita

Today was a good day

Jeremiah had his first day of class and made many new friends. He has a wonderful helper her name is Morgan.  She is a college student studying to be a PT..and she is from Kansas University (small world).  One of the many thing Jeremiah learned today is to fold laundry!

I also got to see abuela who is this wonderful woman, who is Jesus incarnate to me. She is kind, loving, supportive and shares all that in kind words with you. Only she is sitting in a wheel chair as she is telling you how grateful she is to see you, how you have a kind heart & that she can see Jesus working through you. It really is a privilege to be in her presence. She has a calming about her that is reassuring. Kind of like if she left the world tonight, you just know that she would be singing with the angels in the morning at sunrise.

Chincha Day 1

youth center day 1

Beth, Crystal, Raul & Jessie

professional tilers?
Day one of tiling is complete after we all put heads together to try to
remember geometry to square off the room and to convert feet to meters.
We met Pastor Pedro and picked out the tile that he would like for the
church. Luckily a bicycle delivery man transported the hundreds of pounds
of material from the store to the church. A big thank you to Raul
for negotiating the transport. I think he saved all of our backs.
Once we all got into the grove of tiling things move along quickly.
We are going back to the store tomorrow for more supplies since we
met our goal for today.

arrived!

There are many wonderful things already to say..but let me first say that we have arrived safely.  all luggage, people, medicines etc, made it well!

First we would like to thank the tsa officers in KS who did an excellent job with Jeremiah.  They helped each of us get through the security process well.  Jeremiah had to be hand screened because he cannot go through metal detectors.  He also does not liked to be touched or to stand still...yet the officers gently talked to him, and were careful to only do what was needed.  Jeremiah was very grateful!
our plane in FL landed 2 doors down from our international flight!  Which was a miracle since I have never landed within a few feet of where I needed to be in a large airport!

The whole team went to lunch yesterday and got to see a great horse show.  It was a beautiful farm and we were greatful to go to bed early.

The team who went straight to Chincha arrived safely yesterday at 7:00pm.

Today we see patients, Jeremiah is in the class room, and some will be doing maintenance projects. We give thanks to God for the opportunity to be here and be with all our new friends.
Peace to you,

Beautiful Welcome

Mamas in Peru
We look forward to serving the mamas in Peru by caring for their families.  They gave us such a warm welcome last year that we can still hear them singing and feel their hugs.

In Chincha lovely children and families await us as well such as these - and we look forward to building up the youth center, and working with the elderly at the home.

May God bless all of you in Peru and the ways you all are smart, beautiful, and blessed people.  May the time we spend together empower your children to live healthy, blessed lives.

Peace be with you,

Saturday & Sunday Prayer

Dearest God,

We thank you for your grace, hope and peace during this trip. We dedicate this team to you and ask that all that they do, are, and will be transcends to love and grace. May each suitcase be filled with grace and be an instrument of your peace. May all of those who will guide them through security, check points, migrations, and travel be calm and feel the joy of Jesus Christ. Thank you Holy Spirit for going before, around and within each and every person as they now become the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

Big steps for God

Jeremiah at Bread of Life OUMC
This mission trip is different then the many (at least 15) I've participated in my years past.  The difference?  We are going with my son Jeremiah.  He just turned 19.  I know what your thinking 19 big deal he should be ready right?

Let me just say I am not concern about Jeremiah he is ready.
The part that concerns me is the logistics of getting there.  He has many medications, some of which are liquid, he has seizures and I am hoping not any bad ones while on the plane.  He sings when he sings, and laughs when he laughs (these are great things but not all people feel that way at 3am).

So I ask for prayers for me..his mom to relax and allow me to be his assistant and not get in the way in the many ways God is asking Jeremiah to be a missionary in Peru..on the plane...at the airport...with security...on the way to the airport...etc.  Please pray for me to "Chill mom".

Peace to you,
Georgia

Hopping along?

Getting ready for a mission trip and feel overwhelming at times.  We feel as if we are hopping along from one task to another getting our gear, money, and items together.  If this is how you feel today as you are preparing just STOP!  Take a deep breath and say this simple prayer from
Matthew 19:26
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Mateo 19:26
"Para los hombres esto es imposible, pero para Dios todo es posible."

Hopping around like a bunny is a symptom of you trying to take control.
Let go and let God my friend!

Posting from Chincha Peru October 2008

Thought we would post a few old memories for you to hear what others have experienced in Peru.  Here is one from Kimberly:

Hola!!! This is Kimberly sending our daily update from Chincha, Peru!
What a day today! We have all agreed that we are extremely tired, but a
good tired! I am not sure how to put that any other way. We began today
with another walk through the market at 6:30. Since we gave out too much
candy at VBS yesterday, we had to pick up some new candy for today. I was
kind of glad because that took us in another direction away from the fish
vendors! :o)

We talked with a few people in the market this morning, we especially
enjoyed visiting with a woman that had a cat curled up behind her bananas.
I asked her if we could take a picture and she wanted to get in the picture
too. She was excited to hear we were from the US and she wanted to go home
with us!

After the market, we had another delicioso breakfast at the hotel and
headed out for another day of work. Today we worked at a youth center
in a fairly desolate part of Chincha. Pastor Pedro began by telling us we
were going to tear up the concrete across 10 - 12 feet to run a new water
line to relocate the bathroom and pour concrete in a very large common room.
My first thought was no way will we get this all accomplished. I am not sure
why after all this time I still doubt that God will provide us with the strength
and ability to accomplish what is required. We indeed made a lot of progress
at the worksite and with the help of 4 local men nearly completed the concrete
floor by the time we left. I hauled a few wheelbarrows full of concrete and
scooped several shovels of rock into the mixer. The others did concrete with
me or worked on digging up cement for the waterline. We were all pretty exhausted
and sore by the time we left for lunch.

After lunch, we had a little down time before we headed out to the church we went
to Sunday night for church service to do VBS. When we arrived, it was truly
overwhelming as there were about 85 children and 20 or so adults inside singing
to us as we walked through the doors! It really made my heart melt. We got
organized and started with some ice breakers and singing. Georgia told the kids
a lesson about receiving new life through Christ and comparing it to a butterfly.
We chose that theme and tied it in with our craft of making butterflies out of
coffee filters the kids colored on and then we made the body of the butterfly with
a pipe cleaner. The children were so proud of their butterflies as we told them
muy bien and bonita! I enjoyed having to wrap their colored butterflies with the
pipe cleaner so I could try to talk to them and have them pulling on me from all
directions. We had them color some more and then got them outside to play with
punch balls. That went OK for awhile until the wind took them over the church and
they started running the streets like kite runners! Oy Vey!! Steve thought it
would be a good idea to have some of the children race and he nearly had our other
team members trampled. We gave the children candy, took their pictures and gave
adults pens and pencils. The people there were SO kind to us and so welcoming.
As they did after church service, the women of the church served us refreshments
after VBS.

Our evening began with a meal of chicken-corn soup, then beef, beans and rice and
finally a cup of peaches and of course coffee! The weather here is pretty chilly
and since we eat al fresco, some of us have been consuming more coffee than normal!
After dinner, Dave and Helen led us in our devotional. Dave told us of his journey
with Christ and how he remembered an important time in his life where he was called
back to his walk with God. Helen talked about how much we can rely on God to
provide for our needs and we talked about how the people here are so grateful for
everything they have. Helen also taught us a new song in Spanish that we are
hoping to sing to the kids tomorrow or later in the week. We closed by telling
everyone what our favorite part of the day was. It was hard to come up with just
one!

Singing off from Chincha...we hope this finds everyone well. Thank you for your
continued prayers!

Yeah Rita!

Hi, folks!  I’m excited to be going back to Peru.  I’m a retired Spanish teacher, so as you can imagine, I feel a real affinity with the Peruvian people.  They are so warm and welcoming. They really know what Christian hospitality is all about.  I have come home feeling humbled; that I received more than I gave.

Welcome Beth!

My name is Bethany Bolander. I'm a seventeen year old, high school junior from Michigan, and I am going on my second mission trip to Peru. I've been on a few mission trips, and each one has been special to me: especially my trip to Peru. I experienced a new culture, and got a chance to do God's work and make new friends. That's why I can't wait to go back. I know it will be just as awesome as the first time I went.

Being prepared mentally

To prepare for the upcoming awesome trip we are about to take you must take a moment to be prepared mentally for this trip.  What are some things you can do to prepare?  Glad you asked!  Take time to read the culture information that will be posted here and emailed to you.   Search for articles on line about Peru and the cities we are going to: Chincha & Lima.

Greeting one another!

Allowing new friends to greet us too!
One culture difference you can practice now is to take the time to greet everyone in a room when you enter and when you leave take the time to say goodbye (to each person individually). Culturally this will be a very important practice for you in Peru.  Our team members will call you on it if we see you not doing it.  Why is it important?  Because Hispanic cultures have a different way to determine “schedule” and priorities; one practice they have is to “check in” with each other.  What I mean is in the United States generally we have a schedule to adhere to: 8 am get to work do a, b, c, then at 12:00 go to lunch eat, 12:30 do a, b, c, etc.  Our schedules are very chronologically time driven.  While they do have schedules in Peru and other Hispanic cultures, the importance of community and people override it.   Taking time to say hello and good bye gives us the opportunity to “check in” with this person to see if there is something they need before I continue on my activities.  Please practice as this will help you to start mentally checking into your communities, slow down, and pay attention to people around you (always a good thing)!

I Will Go

I was listening to this You-tube Video song about the decision to go on a mission trip.  In the end it is those 3 words "I"  "WILL"  "GO".  A decision once made by your spirit will not be satisfied until you do indeed go.  My prayers are with all of you as you prepare to go on this trip.

Watch the video and enjoy..

Getting our Body ready - Run your Race!

It is very important to prepare your body for mission work.  This is different task depending on who we are.  Some of us will want to lose weight, others will want to build strength.  Wherever your body is at is where you need to start.  No sense at all looking back at the mistakes that have been made - over eating, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, etc.
One book that has helped me feel less sorry for myself and more empowered is the book "No Finish Line" by Marla Runyon.  She was an Olympic runner.  An awesome inspiration  because she did not let the long list of reasons the world gave her to stop - including her blindness.  In the book she talks about how while running she couldn't see the other runners.  She would just run her best and then find out later how it all turned out!  We need to do the same as we prepare our bodies.  Do not look to the "runner" on the left or the right, but look to your own body and what it needs to be ready. Start today, stay in your lane, and run your race!

Hebrews 12:1-2a  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

Peace be with you,

Ash Wednesday

Traditionally Ash Wednesday starts us on the journey of Lent where we prepare our hearts mind and bodies to receive Christ.  As you prepare to go to Peru this summer you too must prepare your heart, mind and body to go.  Here is one book we recommend you read  "Adam God's Beloved" by Henri Nouwen.  This book will not only prepare you for Peru but is an excellent book for those who wish to know and love people with different abilities.  It is also a perfect book for Lent as it follows the steps of Christ to the cross.  Peace be with you!

Superhero!

Will you be my super hero?
A welcome notice on one of the blog entries had the name "Shera" instead of Sheila.  Although the name Shera (same as a superhero from the 80s) was entered by mistake.  We do want to point out that all that do go on mission teams are indeed superheroes!  They may not look like "She-ra, wonder woman, batman, or spiderman; but inside they have the making of a modern day super hero:
1) they put others ahead of themselves
2) they travel great lengths to help
3) they apply the love and grace of Jesus Christ to work miracles.

When you have a chance give a hug to a super hero near you.  Thank them and let them know how awesome they are!

Peace!

Blessings Shera

I am a stay at home mom for some 30 years now.  When I transferred membership to Brighton First United Methodist Church I was extremely excited as they are a mission church.  Unfortunately due to a battle with cancer I was unable to go on any of the mission trips. My cancer is now in remission so when my Aunt Earilyn asked me to join her on the Peru trip I jumped at the chance.  I am looking forward to working with the Anne Sullivan Center Students and also at the clinic.

Welcome Earilyn

I am a retired elementary school teacher and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Flat Rock, Michigan, where I have been the choir director for many years.  This is my first opportunity to participate in a mission trip – and I’m excited!

Jeremiah already introduced Dr. Darcy...in the previous blog but here is his picture.
Looking forward to another trip this year.

Welcome Jeremiah

Hi, my name is Jeremiah and I will be going to Peru this year.  This will be my first mission trip outside of the United States.  Here are some things about me you should know:
1.  I love to eat, laugh and sing
2. I don't speak much as I have Tuberous Sclerosis which has caused me to have seizures.  I also have several brain tumors but I don't let that slow me down.
3. I love God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  I try to show that every day by loving all those around me even when they choose to not notice me.
4. My parents are trusting God a lot about this trip.  First my dad I know he will be nervous about me traveling so far even though he will be with me.  Please pray for him.  Second my mom she is trusting God about the finances.  Since we all are going this will cost us quite a bit of money.  Please pray for her.
5. Finally, I give thanks that my Dr....Dr. Darcy is going with us.  Mainly because he is very good doctor and I know there are many moms, dads, and friends of people with seizures that are scared.  He will help them know they are not alone.  I will help them understand God loves them.

Peace!
